Online dating is still a relatively new phenomenon – even though it has been around for quite some time, it is only recently that it has shed its reputation as something that is only used by losers who can’t find a date in person. Even with its new found respectability, online dating is still the focus of a lot of discussion over whether or not it’s a good thing. From people who still assume that online dating is only for geeks or the socially impaired, to people who use online dating to spam and creep on others, there is a lot to work with when you are dating online.
Things to keep in mind:
- There are different kinds of dating sites – everyone has heard of Tinder and OkCupid, but those aren’t the only types of dating sites out there. The online world has everything from matchmaking services to sites which have adult hook up information. Not everyone is looking for the same thing out of a relationship, and so they all have their own corners of the internet to work with.
- Make sure you protect your privacy –be very careful with what you share on an online dating site, from pictures to contact details. Not everyone on an online dating site is there to find a date. Some people are there specifically to harvest details and personal information from you and others, posing as a potential date in order to gain access to you and others. If you suspect or know that a profile is not the real deal, then you should report it, or try and let somebody know, so that they can come along and take a look at things themselves.
- Make your profile the best it can be – put your best foot forward when it comes to writing about yourself and your interests. Make the people reading it want to get in touch with you, and want to get to know you better. The profile is the first chance you have to impress somebody online, so make sure that it ticks all the boxes, and has as much information as possible without being too bogged down in minutiae. Focus on what you unique as a person, such as your orchid-breeding programme, your membership of a Star Wars costuming group, the fact that you can juggle while riding a unicycle…anything that makes you stand out from a crowd.
- Don’t share too much, too soon – this ties back into the fake profile problems. Online security is a huge problem, and many people will pose as dates and email other people just to take advantage of their need for a date, and steal their details. Remember that just by being online, you are taking a huge risk. Making plans to meet up with someone who isn’t who they say they are means that a potential robber knows when your house will be empty, and so they will be able to rob it.
